AEO vs SEO: What’s Different in 2026?
SEO still matters. But AI answer engines do a different job — and they need different things from your website.

First, what is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — is the practice of making your content easy for AI-powered answer engines to understand, cite and recommend. Answer engines include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and the AI-generated summaries that now appear in search results.
SEO is still the foundation
A page that search engines can’t find, read or index will struggle everywhere. Clear titles, useful content, fast pages and trustworthy sources still matter. AEO doesn’t replace any of that. It builds on it.
What answer engines do differently
| Traditional SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What the user gets | A list of links | A direct answer with a few names |
| What the system does | Ranks pages | Reads, compares and summarizes |
| What matters most | Relevance and authority | Clarity, evidence and consistency |
| What success looks like | A higher position | Being described accurately — and included |
Because an answer engine writes a summary, it needs enough clear information to explain who you are and why you fit the question. When details are missing, it may leave you out — or fill the gaps on its own.
From keywords to buyer questions
Keywords still help, but buyers don’t think in keywords. A family looking for a dentist wants to know:
- Do you see kids?
- Do you take my insurance?
- Can I book on a Saturday?
- How far are you from my neighborhood?
A page that answers those questions directly is more useful to the family — and easier for AI to summarize without inventing details.
One page, both jobs
You don’t need separate “AI pages.” The strongest approach improves the pages you already have:
- Keep the SEO basics: a clear title, a fast page, and content search engines can read.
- Add what answer engines need: a direct description of your service, your audience and location in plain words, real proof, useful FAQs and consistent business details.
How to measure progress
You don’t need complex tools. Once a month:
- Re-check your readiness score after you publish changes.
- Ask AI tools the same three customer questions and note whether you appear and what they say. Read: How to Know If ChatGPT Can Recommend Your Business →
- Ask new customers how they found you, and add “ChatGPT or another AI tool” as an option.
- Look at your analytics for visits coming from AI tools.
Don’t judge progress by a single AI answer. Look for patterns over time.
FAQ
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on the same foundations as SEO and adds clarity, evidence and direct answers.
Should I create separate pages just for AI?
Usually not. Improve your core pages so they answer real customer questions clearly. That helps people and AI at the same time.
